How to Count Words in WPS Office Writer
Blog / WRITING APPS

In WPS Writer, look for Word Count on the Review tab. WPS's official Writer 2016 instructions describe this command for both a whole document and a selection. If your edition has a different layout, check its current help rather than assuming the desktop menu also exists in the mobile app.
Open the document statistics
Open the draft in Writer, choose Review → Word Count, and read the word total in the dialog. Make sure you are using the word-processing app, not the spreadsheet or presentation editor: a workbook's cells and a slide deck are different counting tasks.
Look at the statistic's label before reporting it. Words and characters are not interchangeable. A long URL can add many characters while representing very little prose. If a client requests a character limit including spaces, use that figure rather than estimating it from the word total.
Select the text that actually belongs in the limit
Highlight the passage before opening Word Count when you need only an abstract, introduction, or essay body. Start with a short paragraph to confirm that the dialog is measuring your selection. A plausible-looking total is not enough if it includes planning notes or excludes the last sentence.
For example, an illustrative file might contain a 760-word article and 90 words of private revision notes. Counting everything gives 850; measuring only the article gives 760. The correct figure depends on what the recipient requested, not which number makes your draft appear closer to the target.
Check footnotes and endnotes separately
The official Writer 2016 help describes an option to include footnotes and endnotes. If that option appears in your version, compare the count with it enabled and disabled. Follow the assignment or publisher's instructions when choosing which result to report.
Suppose the main text has 920 words and the notes add 80. A main-text-only requirement would use 920, while a requirement including those notes would use 1,000. These are example totals, not WPS defaults or a universal academic policy. Keep the notes in your document even when they are excluded from the reported count.
Compare counters without changing correct writing
If WPS and an online counter disagree, copy exactly the same passage into each. Inspect hyphens, apostrophes, numbers, and punctuation after ruling out a selection error. Do not remove correct hyphenation or necessary citations merely to lower a number.
Top Word Counter can measure a clean text excerpt locally in your browser. It does not read WPS's document structure or reproduce every edition's counting rules. Use it while editing, then check the receiving app or submission portal for the final count.
Save the version you measured
After your last edit, repeat the count and save the final draft. Record whether the selection and notes were included. That short record makes a later revision comparison meaningful: a change in scope can otherwise look like a change in writing length.
