Word Count in Notion: Count the Blocks That Matter
Blog / WRITING APPS

Notion's official writing guide documents a Word and character count option in the block menu after selecting one or more blocks. This is especially useful when a page mixes an article draft with checklists and research notes: select the content you actually want to measure rather than treating the entire workspace as a manuscript.
Select the draft's blocks
Open the page containing your draft. Select one or more relevant blocks, then open the block menu and look for Word and character count. Use Notion's current official help for the interface available to you; older tutorials may describe a page-level menu instead.
Start with a short paragraph so you can confirm that you are reading the selected content's count. Once the process is clear, select all the draft blocks you need. A selection is a scope decision: titles, bullet lists, and notes belong in the total only when your intended measurement includes them.
Keep notes out of an article-length check
Notion makes it easy to put planning material beside finished prose. That convenience creates a counting trap. A checklist saying revise opening is useful to you but not part of the article your reader receives. Move such material into clearly labeled blocks or a separate page so selecting the submitted draft is straightforward.
Imagine a page with 720 words of article text and 160 words of planning notes. Measuring everything gives 880; measuring the draft blocks gives 720. Those numbers illustrate a workflow, not a built-in Notion limit. Before editing down to a requested length, check whether extra planning material caused the apparent overrun.
Do not assume linked content is included
A link to another page is not the same as the text on that page. Database entries, embedded documents, and nested pages can contain content outside the blocks you selected. If a report spans several pages, measure the relevant prose in each page deliberately and combine the totals only when the required scope includes them.
For a three-part report containing 310, 450, and 240 words in separate sections, the combined prose total is 1,000. Avoid also counting the same sections in a copied summary or duplicate draft. The most common error in a multi-page workspace is double-counting content, not a sophisticated problem with word boundaries.
Use a plain-text copy for an independent check
When a recipient requires another app or a portal, copy only the finished prose to that destination. Check whether exported text contains Markdown markers, link addresses, or database information that the final reader will not see. A raw export is not necessarily equivalent to your selected article blocks.
Top Word Counter can help measure a clean excerpt locally in your browser. Avoid including private team notes or unrelated workspace material in the copy. The aim is to inspect a defined piece of writing, not to move an entire workspace somewhere else just to obtain a number.
Verify after the final edit
Repeat the selected-block count after changing headings or replacing a passage. Compare the same block scope each time. For strict submissions, check the final destination as well: it may count punctuation and compounds differently. A consistent selection rule is more useful than arguing that one counter must be universally correct.
Frequently asked questions
Can Notion count selected blocks?
Yes. Its writing guide documents Word and character count in the menu for one or more selected blocks.
Will a selected page link count all text on its destination page?
Do not assume so. Measure the destination's relevant content separately when it belongs in your report.
