Word Count in LibreOffice Writer: Full Document or Selection
Blog / WORD COUNTS

LibreOffice Writer displays the document's word and character count in its status bar. For a detailed count, choose Tools → Word Count. If you select part of your document first, Writer also reports the selection, making it easier to measure an essay body without its reference list.
Find the live count before you start editing
Open your document in Writer and look at the status bar at the bottom of the window. Its count updates as you edit. Double-click the count to open the statistics dialog, or use Tools → Word Count if you prefer the menu. These instructions are for Writer, not Calc or Impress, which have different document structures.
Use the detailed dialog when a brief asks for characters rather than words. A character total and a word total answer different questions: spaces and punctuation affect character length without necessarily adding words. Record the statistic the recipient actually requests rather than using whichever number is easiest to find.
Count only the submitted passage
Highlight the first through last paragraph of the passage you need to measure. Open Word Count and read the selected-text figure rather than the full-document figure. This is useful when your file contains a title page, planning notes, or a bibliography that the assignment explicitly excludes.
Suppose the body of a draft contains 860 words and your separate planning notes contain 140. Counting both gives 1,000, but selecting the body gives the figure you need for a body-only requirement: 860. This is an illustrative calculation, not a universal university policy. Always establish what belongs in the submission before selecting it.
How Writer decides what is a word
LibreOffice's help describes a general rule based on strings between separators. Spaces, tabs, line breaks, and paragraph breaks separate words. Visible hyphenated expressions such as plug-in count as one word under its documented examples, while an expression written with a space becomes separate words.
Try a small diagnostic passage: The plug-in works. Then replace plug-in with plug in and check again. The point is not to change your wording to manipulate a limit; it is to understand why two tools might report slightly different totals. URLs, numbers, and punctuation-only strings also deserve attention in unusually technical documents.
Resolve a mismatch without damaging the document
When an online counter disagrees with Writer, compare exactly the same selected passage. Hidden notes or a larger selection can create a much bigger difference than punctuation rules. Paste into a separate temporary document so your original formatting and annotations remain intact.
If the receiving organization specifies LibreOffice, use its count as the final check. If it specifies a submission portal, check that portal after pasting. An independent counter is useful while revising, but it cannot enforce another product's definition of a word. Avoid removing citations, changing correct hyphenation, or inventing abbreviations just to make the displayed number smaller.
A repeatable final check
Save the final draft, select the required content, record its count, and confirm the selection includes the last sentence. Keep the version you measured alongside your submission. When revisions arrive later, repeat the same selection rule; otherwise an apparent increase may simply mean that you included a heading this time and excluded it last time.
Frequently asked questions
Can LibreOffice count words while I type?
Yes. Writer's status bar displays a live word and character count.
Are hyphenated words always one word?
Writer documents visible hyphenated expressions such as plug-in as one word. Other counters or institutional policies may use different conventions.
