Title Case Rules: Which Words to Capitalize in a Title

Blog / GRAMMAR

In title case, you capitalize the first and last word and all major words. Short articles, conjunctions and prepositions usually stay lowercase.

Always capitalize

The first and last word, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.

Usually lowercase

Articles (a, an, the), short coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or) and short prepositions (in, on, at, to), unless they are the first or last word.

Style guides differ

APA capitalizes words of four letters or more. Chicago lowercases all prepositions regardless of length. Pick one style and use it consistently.
