How to Write a Short Bio: Templates for Social, Work and Websites

A good bio answers three questions: who you are, what you do, and why it matters to the reader. Short bios for social profiles may have tight character limits, while website bios can run 100–200 words.

The basic formula

Name + role + who you help + proof + a personal touch. "Maria Chen is a UX designer who helps health startups build simpler apps. Her work has been featured in two design awards. She lives in Toronto with a very loud cat."

Choose first person for social media and personal sites; third person is common for speaker introductions and company pages.

50-word template

[Name] is a [role] who [what you do] for [audience]. [One achievement or credential]. [One personal detail or call to action].

Use the word counter to keep it within the requested length.

150-word template

Add your background, two achievements, your approach or values, and a way to contact you.

Put the most important information first; many readers only see the first lines.

Social profile bios

Platforms set their own bio limits and they change over time, so check the field as you type.

Use the character counter to draft and trim before pasting.
