How Many Words Is a 20-Minute Speech?
Blog / SPEECH LENGTH

A 20-minute speech usually needs about 2,600 to 3,000 words, based on a common speaking pace of 130–150 words per minute. Presentations with slides, demos or audience questions need fewer words.
The calculation
Multiply minutes by your speaking rate: 20 × 130 = 2,600 and 20 × 150 = 3,000.
Time yourself reading one page aloud to find your personal rate, then multiply.
Leave room for pauses
Pauses, applause, slide changes and stories told from memory all take time. Many speakers plan 10–15% fewer words than the maximum.
For a talk with a live demo, script only the parts around it.
Structure a 20-minute talk
A simple plan: 2 minutes opening, three main sections of about 5 minutes each, and 3 minutes closing.
Each 5-minute section is roughly 650–750 words.
Rehearse with a timer
Paste your script into the word counter to see the estimated speaking time, then rehearse with a timer.
Mark sections you can cut if you run long.
