How Many Words Is a 10-Minute Speech?
Blog / SPEAKING

A ten-minute speech allows about 1,500 words at 150 words per minute. That is a calculated ceiling for continuous speech at that rate, not a promise that a 1,500-word presentation will fit once demonstrations, pauses or questions are included.
Calculate the available speaking time
Multiply the minutes you will actually speak by your measured delivery rate. Toastmasters uses 150 words per minute as a planning figure; at that rate, ten uninterrupted minutes gives 1,500 words.
If a demonstration occupies two minutes of the slot, eight minutes remain for speech. At the same assumed pace, the spoken-text budget becomes 1,200 words. This example excludes any additional pause time.
script words = available speaking minutes x measured words per minute
example: (10 - 2) x 150 = 1,200 wordsBuild a useful progression
Organize the talk around a question listeners want answered. For a workshop on repairing a bicycle puncture, the progression might be diagnosis, repair and a final safety check.
Give the difficult step the most attention rather than assigning identical time to each topic. A familiar tool list needs less explanation than the technique the audience has never seen before.
Do not count slides as spare capacity
A visual may replace some explanation, but it may also require time to interpret. Include the words you plan to say while introducing a diagram, pointing out a feature or moving between examples.
Toastmasters explains that listeners need time to process unfamiliar information. When rehearsal runs long, remove a secondary example or simplify a slide rather than delivering the remaining material at an uncomfortable speed.
Rehearse the entire slot
Practice with the actual equipment and any physical demonstration. Starting a timer only after the slides are ready can conceal transition time that will count during the event.
Use the word counter to compare revised scripts, then make timing decisions from complete rehearsals. Confirm whether the organizer's ten minutes includes questions, introductions or handover to the next speaker.
Frequently asked questions
Will 1,500 words always fit ten minutes?
No. It takes ten minutes only at an average of 150 words per minute across the entire delivery.
What does a slower rate do to the word budget?
At an assumed 120 words per minute, ten minutes allows 1,200 words before separately reserved activities.
Should questions be included in the ten-minute limit?
Ask the organizer. Reserve time for questions if they are part of the allotted slot.
