How Long Is a Dissertation? Check the Actual Limit
Blog / ACADEMIC WRITING

A dissertation has no universal word count or page length. Your degree's current regulations determine the limit; for example, Cambridge History and Philosophy of Science sets a doctoral thesis maximum of 80,000 words, including footnotes but excluding the bibliography.
Find the rule for your particular degree
Check the handbook for your department, qualification and submission year. Do not transfer a doctoral limit to a master's project or assume that another university uses the same meaning of dissertation.
Cambridge History and Philosophy of Science specifies an 80,000-word maximum and states that there is no set minimum length. That is a concrete departmental example, not a recommended target for every doctoral researcher.
Read the exclusions carefully
Cambridge Geography also specifies an 80,000-word PhD limit, but its rules list exclusions including appendices, bibliography and figure captions. Its treatment of footnotes depends on whether they are necessary to the referencing system.
The difference matters when comparing apparent dissertation lengths. A count copied from a word processor may include material your department excludes, or omit material its regulations require you to count.
Build a budget around the research argument
After establishing the actual allowance, assign provisional space to the research problem, literature, methods, findings and interpretation. The proportions should reflect the project rather than a universal chapter formula.
For an interview-based study, substantial space may be needed to explain recruitment decisions and interpret participants' accounts. A theoretical project may instead need more room to develop and test its central argument.
Track length before the final revision
Maintain counts for the main text and any separately regulated components. Record which exclusions you have applied so your reported total can be reproduced when you prepare the submission statement.
Discuss a likely overrun with your supervisor early. The cited Cambridge regulations require permission to exceed applicable limits; moving essential discussion into an appendix is not automatically a valid workaround.
Frequently asked questions
Is every dissertation 80,000 words?
No. That figure is a maximum in specific doctoral regulations, not a universal dissertation length.
Do dissertation footnotes count?
It depends on your department's regulations. The cited Cambridge departments do not use identical counting rules.
Can dissertation length be measured in pages?
Some regulations use page limits. Follow the unit and formatting specified by your own program.
