Common App Activities Character Limit: Field Guide

Common App's official activities resource allows 150 characters for activity details, honors, and accomplishments. It separately allows 50 characters for the position or leadership description and 100 for the organization name. Check your live application for the cycle you are submitting before finalizing an entry.

Use each field for its intended information

The role, organization, and activity-details fields have separate allowances. Do not spend the details field repeating information already communicated clearly by your role and organization.

For a school newspaper, put 'Photo Editor' in the role field and the publication's name in the organization field. Use the details to explain the work you actually performed.

Describe work before adding praise

Prefer a specific action to a broad claim about your qualities. An applicant's responsibilities and contributions are easier to understand than unsupported descriptions such as 'dedicated leader.'

An illustrative entry could read: 'Assigned photo coverage, trained new photographers, and organized the image archive for the school newspaper.' Use it as a model for specificity, not as a claim to copy unless it accurately reflects your experience.

Keep the account honest and readable

Common App's resource permits simplifying grammar and abbreviating where needed. Preserve clarity: an unfamiliar string of initials can save space while making the activity harder to understand.

If you helped coordinate equipment for a robotics club, say that rather than upgrading the role to team founder. Include a measurable result only when you can substantiate it; an invented figure is worse than an unquantified but accurate contribution.

Check the final entry in the application

Common App permits up to ten activities but says applicants do not need to enter ten. Choose meaningful experiences rather than treating every available slot as a requirement.

Measure each field separately with the character counter, then paste it into the live form. Review the application's counter and final preview, including spaces and punctuation, instead of assuming your draft document is the final authority.
